TOTY Spotlight: Margaret "Meg" Mimbs

Throughout the month of November, we will be introducing you to the 2022-2023 Glynn County Teachers of the Year.

Margaret "Meg" Mimbs was named Teacher of the Year at Oglethorpe Point Elementary School. She has taught second grade for the past 7 years. Here are some awesome things you should know.

........................................................

Family: My husband, Tyler Mimbs, is a 5th grade teacher at OPES - yes, we met at school! My parents, Michael and Julie Johnson, live locally with my grandmother, Sally Baldwin. My in-laws, Gary and Michelle Mimbs, live in Fitzgerald, GA. My older sister (Catie, married to Eric) and my husband’s older brother (Ryne, married to Haley) are also teachers, and I’m a proud aunt to Aiden, Amelia, and Redding!

Who is your role model? I would have to say that my family has been an incredibly important part of my life. From my immediate family to grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and now in-laws…all of these people have taught me so much about walking in faith, caring deeply, serving others, persisting through challenges, laughing (even when you don’t feel like it), and loving others well. They are definitely why I always want my classroom to feel like a family.

What book has most influenced you? I know many authors who have contributed to my love of words and stories – J.K. Rowling and C.S. Lewis would certainly be near the top of the list if I had to make one. But I would say every book that has allowed me to experience a time period, a cultural experience, or a walk of life different from my own has been very influential.

What is your greatest teaching memory? The moments in which I have seen students loving each other well. I don’t think anything tops that for me.

What is your favorite quote or personal motto? For a while now, my line has been, “People are great.” I know that people are also messy, difficult, and sometimes even the opposite of great; I have many days in which I fall into these categories myself! But if we look for the great, we can find it.

What is a fact about you that most people don't know? I am a proud K-12 product of the Glynn County School System! I attended Oglethorpe Point Elementary, Glynn Middle School, and Glynn Academy. It was a little strange to “come home” to teach, but it has also been the greatest blessing.

Any hidden talents or hobbies? No hidden talents, but I love being outdoors. Paddle-boarding, riding bikes, hiking, or just reading…anything near an ocean or a tree!
